FootJoy Pro SL Golf Shoe Review

FootJoy has updated the upper as expected for a new version, though it’s not a radical redesign. One key difference is the updated contrast between the textured upper around the heel and ankle and the regular Pittards ChromoSoft leather upper, which FootJoy has used for several Pro SL versions. Another update is the strap design, now allowing laces to loop through straps on both the outside and inside of the shoe.

Comfort Underfoot

The main update comes in the form of the new midsole foam. For the first time, FootJoy has used StratoFoam in the Pro SL, previously seen in their HyperFlex and Stratos shoes. The StratoFoam provides a softer, more cushioned feel than the regular foam.

The inner sole has also been revamped with extra padding. While it’s hard to pinpoint how much of the softness is due to the StratoFoam versus the new insole, the combination is noticeably softer underfoot than the previous version.

Sizing and Fit

FootJoy shoes generally run a bit large, so I usually go down half a size, which I did with the Pro SL. While the length felt fine and my toes weren’t cramped, the outside of my foot rubbed against the leather. This didn’t cause blisters but suggested a break-in period would be necessary.

The fit around the heel also felt slightly loose, even after sizing down. While these shoes feel snug, they might suit golfers with a narrow fit better. Once broken in, the premium leather molds to your feet, becoming as comfortable as slippers over time.

Traction and Stability

The Pro SL has been a top choice for many golfers, including professionals, thanks to its stability, comfort, and excellent grip. It features the Infinity outsole design with conical and wider winged studs for maximum traction. This design remains unchanged from the previous version and offers some of the best grip among spikeless golf shoes.
