The Callaway CB wedge is crafted to build confidence in golfers’ short games. Combining traditional aesthetics with game-improving technology, these clubs are well-suited to help a wide range of players.
Most golfers are neither elite ball-strikers nor single-digit handicappers. So, why should they use the same equipment as those who are? This reasoning is the foundation of the new Callaway CB wedge.
The original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have poured significant resources into developing technology that offers more forgiveness on off-center hits. While drivers and putters have seen substantial advancements, wedges have often been overlooked. Callaway’s latest offering proves that wedges can benefit from innovation too.
The Callaway CB wedge features a classic wedge shape, making it visually pleasing at address. Its face is noticeably taller and wider compared to my current gamers. The sole is significantly broader, the top line is slightly thicker, and there’s a hint of offset.
Several distinct visual elements set the CB apart from other wedges. Most notably, the sand and lob wedges come with full-face grooves, although the gap wedge does not. While full-face grooves aren’t my personal preference, they are designed to give golfers confidence that the ball will perform well regardless of where it is struck on the face. Additionally, the matte finish on the faces helps minimize glare, further enhancing the user experience.
The sound produced by the Callaway CB wedge leans toward the lower end of the spectrum. Rather than a sharp “click,” it delivers a deeper, more subdued “whack,” aligning more closely with the latter.
When it comes to feel, chips may not offer the same refined feedback as a traditional bladed wedge, though this largely depends on the quality of the strike. A well-executed chip still feels satisfying. However, don’t expect an abundance of feedback through the hands.
On full shots, the club feels solid and powerful. Callaway attributes this to the inclusion of Urethane Microspheres behind the face, designed to improve both sound and feel. While I can’t independently verify their impact, I can say the club provides a satisfying overall feel.
The Callaway CB wedge delivers on its promises. Chips come off with plenty of spin, thanks to the aggressively milled Jaws grooves, which is no surprise. Full shots launch high and straight, with the cavity back design offering noticeable forgiveness, particularly on approach shots, more so than in greenside situations.
Around the greens, the wide sole on the sand and lob wedges can be challenging to manipulate for finesse shots. This design seems best suited for straightforward techniques, encouraging golfers to simplify their approach: “Choose the right club and make a confident stroke.”
As for the full-face grooves, they remain a polarizing feature for me. Personally, they’re not my preference, but I can’t deny their utility. Having mishit wedges off the toe more than once, I recognize the benefit of grooves extending across the entire face in enhancing consistency.
Another noteworthy feature is the grip. The CB comes equipped with an extended grip developed in collaboration with Golf Pride, allowing players to choke down further for better control on delicate chips—a thoughtful addition for precision around the green.
If you’re a golfer who plays game improvement irons but still relies on blade wedges, the Callaway CB wedge is designed with you in mind. It delivers nearly all the performance of a traditional wedge while offering a level of forgiveness that blades simply can’t match. Many golfers would likely benefit from transitioning to this wedge or a similar design to enhance their short-game consistency.
